Ubuntu – Ubuntu 23.10 End of Life

Hello World,

In this post, since we are back from holidays, we will try to catch up with the news that was around in July 2024.  Today’s post will be an easy one.  You should be aware by now that Ubuntu 23.10 Short Term release has reached end of life in July 11, 2024.

In this post, we will quickly check what does that means for you and what you could do to go back to a supported situation..

Let’s do this !

End of Life for Ubuntu 23.10

We have been using Ubuntu 23.10 during these few months and we have been really pleased with the release.  Ubuntu 23.10 was really a stable version while introducing all the building block that have been made available in Ubuntu 24.04.   Ubuntu 23.10 was really an improvement compared to Ubuntu 23.04 where a number of issues were detected.  Ubuntu 23.10 was really a good release and deployed extensively in our lab.  Ubuntu 23.10 was providing a really nice user experience.  The desktop interface is responsive. The look n’ feel looks quite right, simple and modern at the same time. On of our favorite release.

Back to the news !  Ubuntu 23.10 (coded name Mantic Minotaur) has reached end of Support in July 11,  2024 !  This simply means that you will not be receiving any updates and patches for this release which puts your machine at risk.

What’s should I do ?

You have multiple choices here.

You can either decide to stick with Ubuntu 23.10 (which we would not recommend) and accept the fact that you are putting your system at risk.  Remember that no security updates will be provided by Canonical.

You can also decide to move away from your Ubuntu 23.10 and upgrade to the latest LTS Ubuntu release which is 24.04.  Usually, it’s recommended to wait for first point release to mass deploy Ubuntu 24.04.  The Ubuntu 24.04.1 is still not out but a number of issues have been resolved.  It should be safe to proceed with Ubuntu 24.04 deployment.

If you were using Ubuntu 23.10 as test machines, you could probably decommission them and deploy one of the supported LTS Ubuntu Version which are

  • Ubuntu 20.04.x  (EOL in April 2025)
  • Ubuntu 22.04.x  (EOL in June 2027)
  • Ubuntu 24.04.x  (EOL in June 2029)

The decision is yours and might be dictated by some application compatibly constraints or internal IT related procedure…

xRDP installer Script Updates ?

Our famous xrdp installation script tries to follow Ubuntu release cycle.  We are preparing a new version of the xrdp-installer script which will reach version 1.5.2.  This new release would include really minor changes.   The current xrdp-installer script (version 1.5.1) already support Ubuntu 24.04 and can be used safely.  Version 1.5.1 still include for Ubuntu 23.10 and support will be removed in the coming version.    But again, this announcement would have no impact on the xrdp script.

Ubuntu 24.04 & Snap applications

Since Ubuntu 23.10 has reached end of life, we are assuming that majority of companies or individuals would move to Ubuntu 24.04.  Ubuntu 24.04  is relying more and more on Snaps technology.  We have nothing against snap technology but we have noticed/discovered that Firefox snap version is not supported or not compatible with some government digital services.  Because of this, we had to remove the Firefox snap version and replaced it the standard Debian Firefox version.

Final Notes

Ubuntu 23.10 has reached end of life and it’s time to move to Ubuntu 24.04 if you didn’t do so yet.  We really enjoyed using Ubuntu 23.10 release as it was stable, responsive and was providing modern OS Look’n feel.  To move to Ubuntu 24.04 release, it’s really simple.  If can perform a direct in-place upgrade from Ubuntu 23.10 to Ubuntu 24.04.    There is no reason not to upgrade to the latest and great version of Ubuntu Edition

Till next time

See ya
