xrdp – New releases made available recently (0.10.6)

Hello World,

Neutrinolabs, the team behind xrdp and xorgxrdp package, has released a new version of their package software.  xRDP version 0.10.6 is the latest version of the xrdp package made available and was released 2 weeks ago (April 17, 2026).   The release 0.10.6  is a maintenance release to provides mainly security fixes and some bug fixing.  This release is still not including Wayland support.

More and more distributions are shipping with Wayland Display Server by default now.  Gnome Desktop latest version have removed x11 packages completely.  KDE will probably follow with its next iteration.  We can see that some activities and discussions are ongoing within the xrdp package maintainers in order to provide support Wayland support.  But at this stage, nothing concrete.

On the other hand, there are still some distros or legacy distro that are still relying on X11 Display server where xRDP is still a good remote desktop solution for Linux machines.  So, even if Wayland seems to be the way forward, there are still some support to provide to some other distros.  This is why we are still providing some information about xRDP software and that we provide some “maintenance” releases of our small xrdp-installer script.

Let’s see quickly what this release is offering and/or fixing…. Let’s go !

Overview

xRDP is a software package that provide remote desktop capabilities against a Linux machine and mimics the Remote Desktop capabilities that can be found in Windows Operating system.  Using xRDP, you can basically use your standard remote desktop client on Windows or Linux and you can remotely access your Linux Desktop interface.   The team behind the software is releasing on regular basis updates. These updates can introduces new features and/or can address security issues.

You can find the latest releases & release notes for the xrdp package by visiting this page

If you are using xrdp for a long time or if you are using our little xrdp-installer script, you will probably know that the xrdp package works on X11 Display server and that at this moment, Wayland support is not there.  So, do not try to run the xrdp software package on any distribution using exclusively Wayland Desktop interface (i.e. Gnome 49 and higher)

New xRDP releases

xRDP packages has actually 2 branches available.  You have the branch 0.9.x which is end of life and you have the Branch 0.10.x which is where the team is putting most of their efforts nowadays.

This post focuses on the Branch 0.10.x

Release Version 0.10.6

Note :

You can obtain detailed information about these features and bug fixes directly from their release page (see https://github.com/neutrinolabs/xrdp/releases/tag/v0.10.6)

The latest and greatest version of xRDP is set to 0.10.6 .  This package has been released a few days ago (April 17, 2026).  Looking at the release page for this version, this release is mainly bring security fixes….

Security fixes

Xrdp version 0.10.6 addresses multiple high-severity vulnerabilities, including RCE, local privilege escalation to root, and data integrity issues affecting versions up to 0.10.5. Key flaws include CVE-2026-32105 (MAC verification failure), CVE-2026-32107 (privilege escalation), and various buffer overflows in the EGFX and NeutrinoRDP modules.

The following items lists the discovered vulnerabilities and you can obtain more information by clicking on them

Some vulnerabilities can be mitigated by changing some specific settings within your xRDP configuration. Other vulnerabilities such as the CVE-2026-32623 can be only fixed through upgrading to the latest xRDP package.

You will need to evaluation your situation and see what approach you can use to protect your xRDP infrastructure (mitigation when possible or upgrade where possible).

Bug fixes

Based on the release page, we can list below the new features included in this release

    • Honour pass_shell_as_env setting only if user sets a shell (#3725)
    • We no longer try to create a NULL authentication file when using VNC over UDS (#3727)
    • Problems with the Brazilian ABNT2 keyboard mapping have been corrected (#3728 3736)
    • A ‘file exists’ error when installing xrdp over an existing installation has been addressed (#3780)

New features

This release does not bring any major new features.  The Release page mentions that 2 issues have been fixed and related to xorgxrdp package

New xorgxrdp release

No new release for the xorgxrdp package.  The latest version is still versop, 0.10.5

Should you Upgrade

If you have performed a custom installation of xRDP on your system,  we would recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of the xRDP package ensuring that discovered vulnerabilities are fixed.

If you have installed the default xRDP package that ships with your Linux Distribution,  you will need to check if updates have been provided to fix these detected issues and we would recommend your to keep your system up to date.  Some CVE seems to be covered already by security fixes by distro like Debian or Ubuntu.  So, you will need to asses your system and decide if the security patch provided are enough to secure your machine or if you want to upgrade your package to the latest version (i.e. 0.10.6) by compiling the package from source for example…

Wayland Support ? Not yet !

Like with previous releases, xRDP still does not support Wayland Display Server and still relies on the aged Xorg Display Server.   More and more distribution are shipping with Wayland Display server as default one.  More and more releases remove X11 dependencies from their distributions.  Gnome Desktop are removing any reference to X11.  Ubuntu 26.04 with Gnome is solely using Wayland layer and if you try to install xrdp and access your Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop, it will simply fails.  Other Desktop community (i.e. KDE) has also announce that Desktop will be only supporting Wayland in the near future

The team behind the xRDP package has started looking at supporting Wayland Display server and some work is ongoing.  However, migrating from X11 to Wayland is bringing a lot of challenges as we can see from the discussion in their Github repo.   We have no idea when a xRDP  package including Wayland support will be made available.  This means that maybe there will be a need to find another solution to perform your remote connection against Linux machine.

What’s the impact for me ?

So, a lot of people is asking,  what will be the impact in the near future if xRDP is not providing Wayland support.  The impact of this lack of support mainly depends on the Graphical Desktop interface you are using.

Gnome Desktop Version 49 has reduced support for X11 Display Server.  Gnome Desktop Version 50 (the one shipping with Ubuntu 26.04)  has removed completely the x11 packges and xRDP will not work on this system.  The good news here is that Gnome Desktop ships with a built-in RDP solution that can be used as a valid replacement for the xRDP package software.  We are not speaking about the Desktop Sharing feature where someone needs to be logged on.  No !  We are speaking about a propre Remote Desktop connection with headless support where people can perform a remote connection even if no one is connected on the system.  This feature is available in Gnome Desktop since version 45 (i think) and has improved with time.

Using gnome Remote Desktop, you will be able to perform a remote desktop session while using the Wayland Display Server.    The built-int solution offers

  • RDP protocol support
  • Redirect sound
  • Reconnect to existing session
  • multi-user support
  • Clipboard support

If you want to see how gnome remote desktop utility is working, you can have a look at this old post (Testing Gnome 46 Remote Login Feature)

If you are using KDE desktop,  at this stage, there is still some support for X11 Display Server but the team behind KDE has made clear that Wayland will be the future and X11 package might not be available in the next release.  So, xRDP should still be working on Kubuntu 26.04.  Kubuntu has not really a built-in RDP solution where you can connect to the system while nobody is logged on.  There is the krdp software solution but as far as I know,  it does not offer the same level of functionalities of xRDP or Gnome Remote Desktop.

As long as Kubuntu Desktop interface ships X11 packages,  xRDP remains a valid remote desktop solution.

Other distribution like Debian 13 or Xubuntu can still use xRDP package since they are using different desktop interface solution or version.  Debian ship with older Gnome version that still provides x11 support. Xubuntu provides xfce desktop which also still support X11 Display Server.

If you still want to use xRDP package because it provide features that you need (i.e. multi-session),  you can decide to do the following

  • keep running Ubuntu 24.04 since it will be supported till 2029
  • Plan you upgrade to Ubuntu 26.04 (which will be available in April 2026) shipping with the Gnome Desktop but install an additional Desktop interface that will be used only for remote sessions.   This was the approach in the past when Unity desktop was not supported with xRDP and everybody was falling back to xfce desktop
  • start hunting for any other solution that could potentially provide RDP support

Final Notes

This is it for this post !

xRDP Team has released new releases which does not yet include Wayland Support.  We have seen that some discussions and code changes are ongoing but we can tell that we are really at an early stage.   We have no information about a possible release date of an xRDP package that would provide support for Wayland.   We will follow up on the possible progress

If you are a Gnome Desktop user and you are using one of the latest version of the Desktop (i.e. Gnome 49 or Gnome 50), the best alternative available to xRDP at this stage woul be the Gnome Remote Desktop.  Gnome Remote Desktop is built-in with the Gnome Desktop package and easy to configure.   There are still some issues or annoyances with the Gnome Remote Desktop but it really does the job.

So, we will keep following the progress on xrdp project and support for Wayland.  We will probably publish a new post on how to use the Gnome Remote Desktop which will be probably the new way forward for Gnome Desktop.

Note :

Since the move to Wayland Display Server,  we will release only maintenance version of the xrdp-installer script since it will be probably less and less useable in the future.

Stay tuned

Till Next time
