Ubuntu – Ubuntu 25.10 has been released !

Hello World,

It has been some time since our last post.  We are quite busy and we couldn’t manage to get some time to publish news and info on our little blog.  So, today, we will speak again about Ubuntu Operating system.  As you probably know, there is a new kid in town.  Ubuntu 25.10 has been release on October 9, 2025.  This release is a short term release (STR) and will be supported for the next 9 months.

Ubuntu 25.10 is providing a peak preview of the long term next release (Ubuntu 26.06) to be made available in 2026 and introduces numerous changes that might affect some users…. The major change will affect (potentially) Gnome Desktop users.  The Gnome 49 Desktop interface has introduced an important change : the removal of X11 packages…

So, let see how good or bad is the Ubuntu 25.10 release…..

Overview

Again, there are a lot of information, reviews and posts about Ubuntu 25.10 and what’s new.. We do not want to repeat the same information and we will not go into details in this post.  We will look at some of the points that we think are interesting in this release….

What’s New in this release ?

Ubuntu 25.10 is considered an interesting/exciting release when you read blogs and information on internet.  There a lot of changes that have been included in this release, some are invisible and some are more visible.  Some changes might impact some users and they might need to find other way of working with Ubuntu 25.10

The first major change would concern Ubuntu users running Gnome Desktop as their Desktop Interface.   The latest version of Gnome (Gnome 49) is included in this release.  There are some refinement in the look’n and feel and the interface look really smooth and pleasant to work with.   However, one important change has been included in Gnome 49.   Ubuntu 25.10 will no longer include Xorg/X11 session for the Gnome Desktop.  Indeed, Gnome 49 disables X11 support for Gnome and a number of features relying on X11 will not work anymore.

This means that if you are using Ubuntu Gnome Desktop flavor, you will be using a Wayland-only session.  One big impact is related to xrdp software support which will not work with Gnome 49.

Ubuntu 25.10 is also running with the latest kernel release including most recent hardware support.

Ubuntu 25.10 also ship with a new capability related to TPM and disk encryption.  So far, we have not been able to test this feature but looks promising.  LUKS (Linux Unified Key Setup) is available for a long time in Ubuntu and offer strong encryption.  The only issue or complain is that you need to input passphrase each time the system boots.  Integrating TPM support would allow still strong disk encryption and would allow the system to boot without requesting passphrases on each reboot.  Again, we have not test this feature and we are not sure which devices would support this…. We will try to test it in the near future and see how it works….

Ubuntu 25.10 also introduce rust based system components.  This is probably not the most visible change but it has been flagged as an important change.  Integrating Rust within operating system is seen by many as a major step into modernizing the operating System

Ubuntu 25.10 also introduce/replace some default applications by other.  These changes should be transparent for users and if needed they can re-install these applications.

Ubuntu 25.10 is normally using snap applications but you can also add support for Flatpak technology.  You can install Flatpak framework on Ubuntu 25.10 but it seems that there is a bug and Flatpak application cannot be installed.   This bug has already been reported and Canonical is working on a fix.

Gnome 49 and Remote Desktop

Gnome 46 introduced remote desktop support through the RDP protocol.  If you want to test this feature and obtain more information, you can check this post (Testing Gnome 46 Remote Login Feature).   This feature was a great addition in the Gnome Desktop.  It indeed offers remote desktop support with Wayland support.   The Gnome iteration has introduced some improvements in the Gnome Remote Desktop feature and it is more than useable.

Gnome 49 still ship with the built-in Gnome Remote desktop capability.  You can enable this feature and you should be able to remotely connect to your Gnome 49 using the Wayland session.   This feature allows one user to be connected on the remote Ubuntu machine.

xRDP Version in Ubuntu 25.10

xRDP package software that has been made available in Ubuntu repository for Ubuntu 25.10 is the version 0.10.1. Since the package version 0.9.x is being deprecated, it is good to see that Ubuntu 25.10 includes one of the more recent version of the package.  However, this is not the latest one available which is 0.10.4.x.   You can keep running this version or you can decide to upgrade to the latest version. As you probably know by now, we have developed a small script that automate the installation of xRDP package and allows you to install the latest available version of the package (i.e. 0.10.x)

Now,  It is important to note that XRDP Software DOES NOT SUPPORT WAYLAND So, if you are planning to deploy Ubuntu 25.10 with Gnome 49, you will notice that the xRDP software will simply not work.   The team behind has started investigating support for Wayland but at this stage, nothing exists for Wayland support.   Other Desktop interface would work and would allow to fallback to X11 session.  We have not tested all the Desktop interfaces yet.  So, it seems that xfce is still a good candidate if you need to use xRDP Software.

If we have time, in the near future, we will start testing each Desktop interface with Ubuntu and see which one could be used with xRDP software.  Again, if you are planning to use the Gnome Desktop as default Desktop, you will not be able to use xRDP against Ubuntu 25.10.   The only alternative currently available is the builtin Gnome Remote Desktop.  This feature is working great but has some limitations compared to xRDP.    Gnome Remote Desktop

  • support only one connection
  • does not support clipboard
  • does not support drive redirection
  • support (by default) sound redirection.

So, as you can see, Ubuntu 25.10 introduces some significant changes when it comes to remote desktop solution….

Final Notes

Voila ! This is it for this post…

Ubuntu 25.10 is really an interesting release. Canonical has put a lot of changes in this release as they are preparing the next LTS release for Ubuntu 26.04.   Canonical seems to modernize the Ubuntu operating system while providing a familiar look and feel.   We have seen around us people using more and more Ubuntu solution.  The general look’n feel is really great and we have a modern interface that is pleasant to work with and responsive.   Ubuntu 25.10 is really a good surprise.

Ubuntu 25.10 with Gnome Desktop will probably impact xRDP users.  Gnome 49 desktop is Wayland-only session and it will not be possible to use XRDP (at this stage) since xRDP is relying on Xorg/X11 packages.   The only option available at this stage, if you need remote desktop capability for Gnome Desktop, would be to use the built-in gnome remote desktop feature.    Please note that some other Desktop interfaces might be still working with xRDP package….

If we have some time, we will publish more posts related to Ubuntu 25.10, xrdp support and Gnome remote desktop feature…..

Till next time

See ya

  1. I’m not using ubuntu but the xRDP problem happens on the Arch Linux, too. The xRDP simple crashed with some traceback texts in system journal, and I can only install xfce4 just for remote connect, which works but not as good as gnome (≤48) on xRDP (such as nework proxy on/off control).

  2. @Fischer,

Thank you for visiting our blog and providing some feedback. Indeed, xRDP issue is not related to Ubuntu per se or Fedora or Arch… The problem is with Gnome 49 that has removed support for X11 Display server. Fedora and Ubuntu have decided to move forward and use Gnome 49 and Wayland as Default Display Server. There is a built-in option for Remote desktop in Gnome 49 but does not provide all the feature of xRDP indeed. We are expecting that xRDP team will provide new releases including some wayland support. Some work and discussion are already happening but there is no release date about xRDP package supporting Wayland and Gnome 49 Desktop.

As you mentionning, option to still use xRDP would be to replace the gnome 49 Desktop with another desktop interface which could be xfce, cinnamon, kde, lxde…..

    Hope this answer your question

    Till next time
    See ya
