xrdp – New release made available recently (0.10.6.1) – Security Fix mainly

Today, we will publish a quick and brief post about xrdp software.  A new release has been made available and mainly fixes vulnerabilities founded in the previous package. The release 0.10.6.1 fixes around 10 vulnerabilities.  Some of them are marked as critical some other are marked a medium.  

We are still monitoring the xrdp repo to see for any new releases or any progress on adding Wayland support.  As previously, the release 0.10.6.1 does not include any Wayland support.  The team behind the software package has started some investigations about Wayland Display server but nothing has come out so far.   

More and more distributions are shipping with Wayland Display Server by default now.  Gnome Desktop latest version have removed x11 packages completely.  KDE and the Plasma Desktop is also planning to remove completely the X11 packages with its next iteration of release.  The future seems to be focusing on Wayland and xRDP needs to adapt fast before other software solution would take over. 

On the other hand, there are still some distros or legacy distro that are still relying on X11 Display server where xRDP is still a good remote desktop solution for Linux machines.  So, even if Wayland seems to be the way forward, there are still some support to provide to some other distros.  This is why we are still providing some information about xRDP software and that we provide some “maintenance” releases of our small xrdp-installer script.  If the situation does not change, we are expecting to see less and less usage of xRDP in the near future… 

Overview

xRDP is a software package that provide remote desktop capabilities against a Linux machine and mimics the Remote Desktop capabilities that can be found in Windows Operating system.  Using xRDP, you can basically use your standard remote desktop client on Windows or Linux and you can remotely access your Linux Desktop interface.   The team behind the software is releasing on regular basis updates. These updates can introduces new features and/or can address security issues.

If you are using xrdp for a long time or if you are using our little xrdp-installer script, you will probably know that the xrdp package works on X11 Display server and that at this moment, Wayland support is not there.  So, do not try to run the xrdp software package on any distribution using exclusively Wayland Desktop interface (i.e. Gnome 49 and higher) 

New xRDP release

A new release, version 0.10.6.1,  has been made public on July 6, 2026 and mainly fixes vulnerabilities found in the previous releases.  The following vulnerabilities have been founded

The release 0.10.6.1 fixes these vulnerabilities. 

Should you Upgrade

If you have performed a custom installation of xRDP on your system,  we would recommend you to upgrade to the latest version of the xRDP package ensuring that discovered vulnerabilities are fixed.   

If you have installed the default xRDP package that ships with your Linux Distribution,  you will need to check if updates have been provided to fix these detected issues and we would recommend your to keep your system up to date.   So, you will need to asses your system and decide if the security patch provided are enough to secure your machine or if you want to upgrade your package to the latest version (i.e. 0.10.6.1) by compiling the package from source for example…

Wayland Support ? Not yet ! 

Like with previous releases, xRDP still does not support Wayland Display Server and still relies on the aged Xorg Display Server.   More and more distribution are shipping with Wayland Display server as default one.  More and more releases remove X11 dependencies from their distributions.  Gnome Desktop are removing any reference to X11.  Ubuntu 26.04 with Gnome is solely using Wayland layer and if you try to install xrdp and access your Ubuntu 26.04 Desktop, it will simply fails.  Other Desktop community (i.e. KDE) has also announce that Desktop will be only supporting Wayland in the near future

The team behind the xRDP package has started looking at supporting Wayland Display server and some work is ongoing.  However, migrating from X11 to Wayland is bringing a lot of challenges as we can see from the discussion in their Github repo.   We have no idea when a xRDP  package including Wayland support will be made available.  This means that maybe there will be a need to find another solution to perform your remote connection against Linux machine.

Final Notes

xRDP Team has released new releases which does not yet include Wayland Support.  We have seen that some discussions and code changes are ongoing but we can tell that we are really at an early stage.   We have no information about a possible release date of an xRDP package that would provide support for Wayland.   We will follow up on the possible progress 

If you are a Gnome Desktop user and you are using one of the latest version of the Desktop (i.e. Gnome 49 or Gnome 50), the best alternative available to xRDP at this stage woul be the Gnome Remote Desktop.  Gnome Remote Desktop is built-in with the Gnome Desktop package and easy to configure.   There are still some issues or annoyances with the Gnome Remote Desktop but it really does the job. 

For KDE, at the moment, you can still use xrdp but the next iteration will be relying only on Wayland and there is no proper alternative available yet.  There is the krdp software that basically allows you to share your screen but someone needs to be logged on in order to make it work.   We are also monitoring the Linux Mint edition which is also moving slowly towards Wayland…. 

So, we will keep following the progress on xrdp project and support for Wayland.  We will probably publish a new post on how to use the Gnome Remote Desktop which will be probably the new way forward for Gnome Desktop.

Since the move to Wayland Display Server,  we will release only maintenance version of the xrdp-installer script since it will be probably less and less useable in the future.
